If they cured the problem, they'd have no job
Published on March 10, 2004 By Dynosoar In Current Events
From the comments on my last post I have concluded that poverty ( as defined by governmental agencies ) is nothing more than
job security for the thousands of human services organizations that exist to prolong the situation, not solve it.

If they solved the problems they wouldn't have a purpose.
It is why our schools are inadiquate. To continue the cycle.
It's why entitlement programs promote unwed mothers. To produce another generation for the cycle.
It's why most Real Estate investors look hard at building low-income housing. To house( at govt expense ) the growing ranks of "poor".
It's why banks are promoting high interest sub standard credit cards. To reap the largest chunk of those entitlement dollars.

It's where the money's at.

If the poor were to suddenly all become educated, employeed, and empowered, the economy would crash, there would be no need for all of those social services,
The beauracrats would be out of a job, by doing their job, and we know how efficient
most Government Agencies are.........

Hey, you know, to think about it,
LBJ came up with an idea on how to incorporate socialism with capitalism, by federalizing charity.

You are absolutely right. The Welfare Reform Act, which is costing a lot more money, is supposed to help break these cycles. The states lose their federal funding if they do not comply. The women going into the job market, the daycares. Is it helping? I guess time will tell, eh?
Putting these government agencies out of work would create a new unemployment problem, wouldn't it?

Good article.

Wisefawn,
Whew ! After your post on my earlier article I thought you may have had an issue with my opinion.
I'm glad you concur.
I almost feel as tho I have a convert.....

Actually if you work with these people, you realize that what you say is true. On the other hand what about the police and all the other law enforcement agencies. Do they perpetuate crime?
on Mar 10, 2004
Actually, you do run into that at the upper echelons of law enforcement, Sherye. I live out on the Front Line of the War on Drugs, down in West Texas, and it is a major money-making industry. The probation system at the low-end is a system that essentially keeps losers strung along, paying fees to the city, and just as they're about to get off probation, it seems that magically they get caught in something else in order to get the probation extended. The situation with funds coming from confiscation is even more sickening, because that's a major source of departmental revenue for any city with a decent-sized population.

Are they perpetuating crime? I wouldn't say that they're in cahoots with the narcotraficantes, but they do have a major stake in how laws are crafted and how it affects careers, budgets, and profits for the cities and counties where this is an issue. If drugs were decriminalized tomorrow, we'd probably have a new and massive series of metropolitan budget crunches a la the recent state budget crunches we witnessed recently.

Dynosoar- No convert here, sorry. I just agree with the fact that it is a sysytem designed to keep you in the sysytem. These women are supposed to work all week and still look for a regular job. The government said, get these people working or you lose your funding, so they put them out into jobs, not caring about anything else.

Wisefawn,
You need to look at the loopholes, these women are attending "community college", or at least registering ( and receiving Pell Grant monies ), as long as they are "training" for work they stay in the system.
One of my renters has "nearly" completed certification or degrees for Cosmotology, Daycare mgt, Nurses Aide, Criminal Justice,
and Paralegal. She's smart in many ways, because as long as she's enrolled, and keeps changing fields of study, she's on the dole............
She is actually going to start taking classes in welding this summer.
Now, who do you suppose taught her how to work this system ? She has to report to her Social worker EVERY 90 days.........

hehehehe

this is why so many gripe about having to pay so much in taxes.

Either the system is set up to keep you in it, the system actually works, but someone cheats it, or the money is just wasted on toilets that cost 400 dollars a seat

You should read my article, poor people are stupid.
anyway, for ever person who perpetually goes to school, there are others who go and get a job.

I am actually very glad the system has changed from welfare-to-welfare to welfare-to-work. Each state is different in how it handles its clients. The woman you mention above could not do that in NYC. She would have a time limit and/or show progression. She also could not continue after recieving a associate or a degree.

I wonder how others view her doing this in the program? Where I am at she would have been looked down on. She is the reason why I have to work harder to make it because the rules change and effect those who honestly want to be off it while she abuses the system.
