I'm taking a course in Middle Easten History, for points and giggles, I'm posting some of my responses here..
They are at least topical, if not germaine.
It will take generations to bring about the acceptance of Western Tolerance.
Keys to this will include continued military intervention, concluded with swift democratic reform.
Another key to normalization is the acceptance of both Israel and Palestine. This will remove the hackneyed stance of the region, and eliminate a political rally point.
Of course you could move the State of Israel into the center of Ted Turners Montana ranch, and the people of the middle east would still flail themselves in hateful repose, decrying the move as an unfair benefit to the Israeli population, and more befitting the Palestinians.
The golden years of Islam are seen as devine, inspired, and the will of Allah, whereas, we are nonbelievers and infidel, so in no way can our imperialism be accepted on the golden path.
The hatred has got to the point that when a fire goes out in a campsite in the middle of the desert, it is not the will of Allah, it is because the evil west has denied the economic ability to have a electronic heating device.
To the fundamentalist,
We are Satan, we are the false prophets, we can not be trusted irregardless of the genuineness of our deeds. We are the embodiment of the book of Jude, so unless we take upon ourselves the task of assimilating or eliminating the middle eastern masses, we will never have true peace.
Political correctness, and cultural sensitivity be damned, definitive actions have to be taken before 9/11 can be compared to a minor incident.
