Is there something in the water are what?

We live in a small southern town, complete with a dying textile and agricultural economic base. No fast paced lifestyles to hustle thru, no traffic jams, no big problems to speak of.
But reality is mirroring fantasy in the personal relationship department, it seems that every episode of "Desperate Housewives" has played out within our circle of friends.

In the last year 3 middle-aged friends, with families, jobs, and no obvious problems, killed themselves......

In the last year 5 couples we have known well, all married for 15 to 25 years, have divorced. Within this group we have wittnessed an ex-husband run off with his secretary and join a "swingers" club, his ex clubbing with 20 somethings, another 2 couples basically swapping partners, one ex arrested for stalking, a single friend dating the new divorcees, one ex coming "out", one ex barracading himself in his house and being tear gassed out, and I, and my wife, have both been, uh, well, propositioned by our new "single" friends.

No one in our communiy writes for the series, and it seems that all that is missing is a body in a trunk to completely mirror the story line.......

Is my life that much different than everybody else, or is "Desperate Housewives" a more realistic view of life in the burbs ( with just better wardrobes)?

With the exception of Swinger guy and his secretary, it is believed that all the other parties were faithful until divorce.
The surprising thing has been the youthful exuberance of the newly single "40ish" folks. It's like a mass middle age crisis or group recapturing of lost youth.
I always thought in the old days the wife just got a face lift, and the husband bought a Corvette......

Wow! These people are certainly going through some "heavy" mid-life crises!

So did I. This is obviously typical but apparently not the norm for some folks.

That's my quandry, is it something in the water here, or is this more common than I wish to think?
